IIHS Study Reports Increase in Pedestrian Deaths, Recommends Photo Enforcement to Save Lives

A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reported that pedestrian deaths have increased 46 percent from their lowest point in 2009, accounting for 16 percent of all crash fatalities in 2016.

The study examined the environmental factors that contribute to pedestrian fatalities, finding that most fatal crashes occurred in the evening at nonintersections on urban or suburban roads, and that speeding played a role in the uptick in deaths.

To combat pedestrian injuries and fatalities, IIHS recommends implementing pedestrian beacons at road crossings, curb extensions and sidewalks, and installing photo enforcement cameras in high-risk areas to detect and deter speeding, among other strategies.
