National Transportation Safety Board Recommends Use of Automated Speed Enforcement

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released the results of a safety study on reducing crashes related to speeding by passenger vehicles, recommending that automated speed enforcement technology be implemented to reduce the dangerous driving behavior.

The study found that speeding contributed to 112,580 highway crashes between 2005 and 2014. That’s nearly identical to the number of fatalities caused by drunk driving in the same time frame—112,948.

While many drivers acknowledge that speeding is a common occurrence on U.S. roads, there are not negative social consequences associated with it as there are with drunk driving. The NTSB is working to change that, recommending various actions to government agencies, including the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration to address the nation’s speeding problem.

The NTSB recommended action from states with barriers to the implementation of automated speed enforcement, citing the findings that it is an “effective and underused countermeasure” to prevent fatal crashes.
