Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety Releases Annual Highway Safety Report Identifies Automated Enforcement as an Effective Tool to Help Reduce Traffic Crashes

The Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety highlighted the need for new traffic safety laws, releasing its 16th annual Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws. The organization estimates that motor vehicle crashes have an annual economic impact of $242 billion, outlining actions needed to improve highway safety, including laws related to impaired and distracted driving, teen driving and child safety.

The organization recommends that an additional 406 laws be adopted across all 50 states and the District of Columbia to effectively meet safety needs. In addition to new laws, the report identified numerous strategies to improve traffic safety in the long-term, including photo enforcement technology, driver assistance technology such as automated emergency braking, improving large truck safety and seat belt reminders in rear seats.
