Photo Enforcement Benefits Beyond Traffic Safety

October 5, 2016 – While the primary goal of a photo enforcement program is to prevent traffic violations such as red-light running and speeding that lead to injuries and deaths – it’s not the only benefit. The technology helps law enforcement agencies nationwide operate more efficiently and catch criminals that threaten public safety.

Force Multiplier – Photo enforcement serves as a “police force multiplier.” That means the technology enables agencies to free up more patrols for other high priority tasks, while still ensuring problematic intersections and roadways are monitored on a 24/7 basis. More officers are available to respond to emergencies, neighborhood threats and other public safety issues.

Crime Monitoring – In many municipalities, the data collected from safety cameras has been used to solve crimes, including the arrest and conviction of violent offenders. Without the lead, these criminals could still be on the streets, endangering law-abiding citizens.

Self-Funded Programs – In many cases, photo enforcement programs are fully funded by the citation fines of drivers who break the law. Municipalities and law enforcement agencies do not need to allocate more of their budgets to protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
