Survey: NASDPTS Reports More Than 80,000 School Bus Passing Violations in a Single Day
The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) recently released the results of its annual survey on illegal passing of school buses. The results highlight the national scope of the issue, putting into perspective how dangerous illegal school bus passing is for students.
More than 100,000 bus drivers in 38 states and the District of Columbia participated in the survey, tracking the number of illegal passes on a chosen day in 2018. They reported 83,944 illegal passes on that day, which equates to more than 15 million violations in a typical 180-day school year.
NASDPTS has conducted this survey since 2011, with similar results each year. The organization is committed to reducing illegal school bus passing through a variety of channels, including new laws, technological innovations and public education about dangerous driving.
