In a recent report on pedestrian fatalities, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) found that 6,227 pedestrians were killed in 2018 – the highest number in nearly 30 years.
The report found that fatalities increased 4 percent from 2017. When broken down by state, 25 states and Washington, D.C. experienced increases in pedestrian fatalities, while 23 saw a decrease and two remained the same. GHSA noted that numerous factors play into the increased number of fatalities, including increased walking, unsafe road crossings, speeding, distracted driving and more.
