Red-light cameras are significantly improving road safety and public security throughout the Americas, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In addition, police departments rely on automated enforcement programs so they can deploy critical resources where they are most needed – not simply policing intersections. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, most people who live in cities with red-light camera programs support them, too. But despite all the benefits of red-light traffic cameras, there are still misconceptions about these programs.
One of the most common points of confusion is how violations are enforced. After the camera captures photographic and video evidence, there are three layers of quality checks before a law enforcement officer reviews it. Important fact: while technology plays an important role, red-light camera machines do not make the call – local law enforcement officers do! This ensures only drivers who actually break the law and endanger the safety of others are penalized. Want to learn more? The following graphic explains the process.
